Emulating a Professional Photographer

Writer's picture: Adriana KwokAdriana Kwok

I chose to emulate Berenice Abbott, who was known for her New York City photographs of architecture in the 1930's. Her picture are depicted on the right, with mine on the left.

I think that this is my most successful shot because it was taken at a low perspective which created a similar effect to Abbott's work on the right. I was fascinated by the fact that even though both have the same effect, the contrast of a historical building (on the left) versus a modern building on the right gives the same effect of highlighting the details of the structure. The most challenging part of the assignment was ensuring that my pictures was creating the same effects as Abbott's pictures even though my pictures were not taken in New York City. To create stronger images in the future, I think that focusing on creating my story and message will allow myself to create visual media that I, and hopefully others, can resonate with. I am still not sure as to what I want to bring to the world through my lens, but once I figure that out, I can look at my future projects with a goal in mind.

I agree that this is your best image! It perfectly demonstrates the original photographers idea. The angle and the black and white are extremely similar as well as it is an incredible image all around. I also agree with your statement with how although they have the same effect since they are different buildings there is a difference but they highlight the same things.
